Madeira 2009 Golf and Gourmet

Our 4th visit to the wonderful Casa Velha hotel on the sun drenched island of Madeira. Only three hours flying time into Funchal and a short transfer to the Palheiro Estate and the Relais Chateau Casa Velha Hotel.

We have always titled this tour "Golf and Gourmet" and deservedly so, once again our dinning expectations were surpassed by some wonderful meals and wines. The half board option is excellent with a choice of two starter's two mains two deserts or my favourite cheese and biscuits. There is also a magnificent A La Carte menu with mouth-watering delights.

Every attention is given to your enjoyment of the hotel by the head waiter Luis and his staff who are the same each time we visit, which we always consider is a good sign.

Our tournament was held over 4 rounds. 3 at the Palheiro Course which is attached to the hotel, a very picturesque and undulating course with quiet sever elevation changes and one round over Santa de Serra a thirty minute transfer from the hotel back towards the airport.

Santa de Serra has held the Madeira Open on many occasions and is not for the faint hearted, built on a large scale and very high it is severely affected by the wind which makes the course very challenging. There are also large elevation changes so playing in a buggy is recommended other than the very fit. Yours truly is not included in that list.

Palheiro is walk able just but we would also recommend a buggy to get the most enjoyment from your time on the course.

The winners of our tour here was in third place last years winner Eileen Whittle from Cambridgeshire in second spot Ellie Sims from Norwich and the winner Richard Wood from Doncaster.

Who played consistently throughout leading on day one and never moved far from the lead, the highlight being the 43 points he scored over the Palheiro course in round three. Well done to everyone who played.
